THE Maria Island Walk is renowned for amazing landscapes, well-preserved convict history and the vast array of wildlife: but did you know a streamlined "seasonal friendly" version operates throughout winter.
This beautiful island off Tasmania's east coast provides a three-day/two-night winter experience offering spectacular walks during the day, followed by delicious meals and matching wines in the evening and ending with a warm, comfortable bed at night.
During winter, guests are accommodated at heritage-listed Bernacchi House in the World Heritage convict settlement of Darlington. The house, dating back to 1880 when it was home to Italian settler and pioneer Diego Bernacchi, has been beautifully restored. Guests are greeted with a roaring open fire.
The guided winter walks leave and return to Bernacchi House daily and vary in length and difficulty. Walkers can stroll through the gentler tracks and observe wildlife including wombats, elegant Cape Barren geese and a growing population of Tasmanian devils.
The Winter Escapes walks have departure dates up until August 31 and cost $1390 per person.
