Smoking ban in Queensland's national parks brings fresh air

Smokers are now be banned from lighting up within 10 metres from visitor facilities including picnic tables, barbecues, toilets, information shelters and occupied camp sites.

The ban came into effect from February 1.

National parks minister Steven Miles said the restrictions are aimed to protect "the health and well-being of park visitors" as well as the smokers themselves.

"We want to support people who want to stop smoking, and protect those who choose not to smoke," Dr Miles said.

"While the focus will be on educating visitors about the new rules, rangers do have the power to issue on-the-spot fines of $243."

Rangers will have a lot of ground to cover to issue those fines, with the new restrictions will applying to parts of 272 parks, including 245 camp grounds.

Chief health officer Dr Jeannette Young welcomed the restrictions.

"Experience shows that strong smoking bans increase people's enjoyment of smoke-free public places and provide smokers with a clear understanding of where they should not smoke," she said.

Dr Young said thanks to Queensland's tough smoking laws, the adult daily smoking rate has dropped to 12 per cent.

Where can you smoke in Queensland?

Queensland has the toughest smoking laws of all the states and territories.

Smoking is now banned at most outdoor public spaces, including public transport waiting spots, within 10 metres of skate parks, pedestrian malls and public pools. It's also banned at all outdoor dining areas, patrolled beaches, children's play equipment and major sport stadiums.

Since May 2014, smoking has been banned in correctional facilities - the first state to do so.

New South Wales has the next toughest smoking bans, prohibiting smoking near play equipment, public pools, and public transport stops.

Norfolk Island has the most relaxed laws - smoking is not prohibited inside restaurants, bars and hotels, with establishments usually having a designated room for smoking.
