A PAIR of lively retirees are courting a lot of attention at their new home in Tasmania’s Huon Valley.
The two healthy Tasmanian devils have settled into their new home at Huon Valley Caravan Park after years spent helping to save their species.
Five-year-old Lucky and six-year-old Miranda are the star attractions at the caravan park in Huonville, which recently opened its new enclosure.
The pair, which were part of the Save the Tasmanian Devil Program, will now appear before park guests once a day at 4pm (viewing is included in the accommodation fee).
The caravan park owners approached the Save The Devil Program, offering to help raise public attention about the plight of the marsupial species, which has been devastated by devil facial tumour disease.
The free-range facility will house retired devils no longer required for breeding.
These devils are not suitable for release to the wild because they are semi-tame and accustomed to people and vehicles.
The caravan park is helping the Tasmanian government with its ongoing plan to secure the future of the devil by donating all funds raised to the Wildcare Devil Fund, which will be used to buy virtual fencing – electronic alarms placed on roadsides – to keep wild devils off the road.
