More and more seniors are currently accessing home care through the Home Care Package Program, a government-subsidised initiative connecting them with the health and care services they need.
So if you're 65 and over and eligible for this funding, you too can connect with a range of personal services to keep you connected with the community, remain independent, and live life your way.
Here's how to get started in three easy steps:
1) Investigate available options
If you think you or a loved one is in need of help and would benefit from home care, you should educate yourself about all available services. If discussing home care with others, think about encouraging them to do their own research too. This could involve drawing on the experiences of people they trust - friends, family or even a healthcare professional - as well as researching online.
2) Contact My Aged Care and get assessed
To apply for home care, you need to contact My Aged Care (MAC) and request an assessment. For more information, go to myagedcare.gov.au
Next, you'll get assessed over the phone by MAC. This is an opportunity to discuss your specific care needs, to ensure your preferences and requirements are taken into account.
If your needs indicate you require a Home Care Package, MAC will refer you to an Aged Care Assessment Team to complete an in-home assessment. This will determine your eligibility, and the home care package level to best meet your needs.
3) Connect with a care provider
Following your assessment, MAC will notify you of the outcome via mail - whether you're eligible for a Home Care Package and, if so, the package level approved. Following this, you'll have 56 days from the date of allocation to choose a home care provider, work with them to create a customised care plan to suit your needs and preferences, and start receiving care.
