Coffee maker Moccona asked Australian and New Zealand design students to come up with designs that have a sustainability theme for a special collection.
In particular, the designs needed to highlight important sustainability topics in a beautiful way to inspire people to take small steps towards creating a more sustainable world.
The six winning designers were picked from more than 60 entries, and their designs are now featured on the limited-edition Moccona Decorative Jar collection, which includes:
- Pedaling Forwards (designed by Jemma Ortiger) - encouraging sustainable transport
- Our Whales Below (designed Kaityln Geltner) - advocating for reducing pollution in waterways and on beaches to protect our ocean species
- Protecting Friends (designed by Celine Groene) - celebrating and protecting biodiversity
- Renew (designed by Nicole Canuto) - championing reusability and incorporating sustainable practices in daily lives
- Small Actions (designed by Georgia Billman) - highlighting how small actions can play a huge part in bringing about future change
- Bee the Change (designed by Sophie Williamson) - spotlighting how bees, butterflies and pollinators play a major role in our world's ecosystems
Moccona marketing manager Dominique Stichling shared more.
"We all feel like we should be doing more when it comes to sustainability, yet the issue often seems overwhelming, making it hard to know where to start or what we can do as individuals. When it comes to making a more sustainable world, little actions can make a difference," she said.
"For the first time in history we have handed over our iconic jar to a group of talented young designers, giving them a platform to highlight the sustainability issue closest to their hearts. We hope the striking artworks, featured on our latest collection, not only showcase the beauty of the local natural environment in need of protection, but also inspires Aussies and Kiwis to upcycle their Moccona jar and think about other small changes we can all do to make a little difference."
The company has also shared ways its jars can be upcycled so they have a second life. Among the ideas is using them for a herb watergarden, as suggested by Brooke Styles.
Herb watergarden
Materials
- 3 Moccona jars
- Scissors
- Ribbon 0.5-1cm wide (optional)
Preparation
1.Fill jars with 2/3 full with cool water. Don't use distilled water as all the minerals will have been removed!
2.Remove any flowers from your herbs, as these waste plant energy!
3.Trim your herb stems to approx. 15cm high
4.Optional: measure and cut 60cm ribbon
5.Centre jar neck along ribbon and wrap ribbon around jar neck 3 x to fully cover neck with ribbon
6.Tie bow in centre with remaining length and trim tails on a diagonal angle, as desired
7.Pop your herbs into the jars and display in indirect light on a windowsill for a beautiful little reminder of the little things we can do to make a difference at home!
TIP: Though Basil is an annual herb that is usually grown from seed, it is one of the easiest plants to propagate by cuttings and can even develop roots in water. Other simple herbs to propagate in water:
- Mint.
- Oregano.
- Thyme.
- Stevia.
- Lavender.
- Marjoram.
- Savory.
