A 1950s comedy classic, adapted for the stage by one of Britain's great sitcom writers is headed to Perth.
The Ladykillers, based on the 1955 black comedy film starring Alec Guinness and Peter Sellers will play at the Harbour Theatre from August 26-September 11.
The classic film has been reworked for the stage by Graham Linehan, the brains behind hit TV shows The IT Crowd, Black Books and Father Ted.
For those who haven't seen the film, the play tells the story of five inept, would-be bank robbers who set up camp in an old lady's home. The robbers pose as a musical group to throw the lady off their scent as they plan their next heist.
Director Jo Sterkenburg is excited to present the play, saying it translates extremely well to the stage.
"I saw the film one Saturday afternoon about 10 years ago and immediately wondered if there was a stage script for it," Jo said.
"As it turned out, a script had been written and performed in the UK to rave reviews, so I was hooked."
Bringing the show to Perth has been a long time coming. Jo first requested the rights in 2016, but the play was not available until 2019. Another company managed to secure the rights, only for the show to be cancelled due to COVID.
"I finally got the good news last year I had the rights to do the show," Jo said.
The Ladykillers plays at 7.30pm August 26, 27, 31, and September 2, 3, 7, 9, 10 and 11 with 2pm matinees on August 28, and September 4 and 11. Concession tickets are Tickets are $23.50.
