A Melbourne adventure travel company will offer tours of Bosnia and Herzegovina next year, in a bid to boost tourism.
Intrepid Travel's Bosnia and Herzegovina Expeditions will be run as part of a wider project to develop sustainable tourism in the country.
The trips will offer an insight into every day life in the country, 30 years on from the start of the Bosnian War.
Guests will learn how to make traditional dishes in the home of a local, meet the city's only female coppersmith and mingle with the locals in the historic bazaar.
There will be five eight-day departures in 2023. Highlights include:
- A traditional Bosnian meal hosted by locals Mustafa and Mersiha in their kitchen overlooking the city of Sarajevo
- A white-water rafting trip down the Neretva River, through canyons and past waterfalls
- Going off-roading in search of wild horses in the foothills of Mount Cincar
- Stepping inside Josip Tito's bunker, a massive and impeccably preserved underground nuclear shelter from the Yugoslav era that only recently opened to visitors
- Meeting Sarajevo's only female coppersmith while wandering the cobblestone walkways of the city's historic cultural centre
- Getting off the beaten track in Jajce, a small town dating back to ancient times
Priced from $1,995 per person, the tour will include seven breakfasts, one lunch and three dinners, all activities as featured in the itinerary, and accommodation in hotels and country guesthouses.
Intrepid's chief purpose officer Natalie Kidd said the company was excited about helping to make the country more accessible in a way that respected the country's history and supported local communities.
"Though so recently touched by upheaval, the people of Bosnia and Herzegovina are eager to share their culture and customs with travellers," Natalie said.
