More than three decades after taking the West End by storm, The Phantom of The Opera is set to return to stages in Sydney and Melbourne.
Presented by Opera Australia in association with The Really Useful Group, the classic musical will be at Sydney Opera House from August 19, before moving on to Melbourne Arts Centre from October 30.
Composer Andrew Lloyd Webber and producer Cameron Mackintosh said they were excited to be bringing one of the most successful musicals in history back to Australian stages.
"I am certain this spectacular new staging overseen by Matthew Bourne and myself will capture audiences in Sydney and Melbourne later this year," Cameron said.
Josh Piterman will star as the Phantom, bringing the role to Australia after starring in the London production in 2019.
Perth born actor Amy Manford will take on the role of Christine Daaé, while Blake Bowden will take on the role of Raoul.
Based on the classic novel Le Fantme de L'Opéra by Gaston Leroux, the show tells the story of a masked figure who lives beneath the catacombs of the Paris Opera House. The Phantom terrorises all who inhabit the building, until he falls in love with young soprano Christine and devotes himself to making her a new star, at all costs.
The show's beloved score features hits such as The Music of the Night, All I Ask of You and Masquerade.
The production will be directed by Seth Sklar-Heyn.
