It turns 70 this year, and to celebrate its platinum jubilee, the stage adaptation of Agatha Christie's classic murder mystery The Mousetrap is coming back to Australia.
After playing at Sydney from October 8-29, the production is now set to move onto the QPAC Playhouse in Brisbane from November 3, Her Majesty's Theatre in Adelaide from December 31 and Melbourne's Comedy Theatre from February 17. Dates for Perth will be announced soon.
Following a highly successful Sydney season, the production will also return to the city for a second time, playing at Parramatta's Riverside Theatre from June 15.
The production will be directed by Robyn Nevin and produced by John Frost for Crossroads Live Australia.
"We're so excited to present a new production of this enduring and much-loved murder mystery to Australian audiences," Mr Frost said.
"With new films and television mini-series based on her books, there has been a resurgence of interest in Agatha Christie's thrillers, and the novels are selling more than ever.
"What better time to bring The Mousetrap to Australia as it celebrates its 70th anniversary. Will you solve the mystery and pick the murderer?"
The play had its world premiere at Nottingham's Theatre Royal on October 6, 1952 at the Theatre Royal, Nottingham, opening in London's West End on November 25 of the same year.
It ran at the Ambassadors Theatre until 23 March 1974, before being immediately transferred to the larger St Martin's Theatre next door. It is still playing on the West End to this day, making it the world's longest running play.
Agatha Christie originally wrote the story as the short radio play Three Blind Mice, which was broadcast in 1947 as a birthday present for Queen Mary.
The tale was adapted into a short story before rewriting it for the stage as The Mousetrap.
The mystery revolves around the guests and staff of Monkswell manor, who become stranded during a snowstorm following the murder of a local woman.
As it becomes clear the killer walks among them, the seven strangers grow increasingly suspicious of one another.
