Adventure seekers spend big to go off grid in style

Queensland caravan show 2022: What's on

Domestic travel

Queensland's largest caravan, camping and outdoor event promises to offer a variety of vehicles, equipment and masterclasses.

Adventure seekers are set to be delighted by the Let's Go Queensland Caravan and Outdoor Supershow at the Brisbane Showgrounds in June.

More than 220 exhibitors will showcase the latest in caravanning trends, recreational vehicles, technology and accessories on offer. Sessions will include a weights and towing masterclasses, a guest appearance by Creek to Coast's Scotty Hillier, the Offroad 4x4 Towing Test Track, and the chance to meet VANbassadors - caravan and camping influencers.

The event is set to appeal to a growing market of travellers - there was a 275 per cent growth in sales of new recreational vehicles (caravans, campervans, camper trailers and motorhomes) registered in Queensland in September 2021, compared to the same month the year prior.

Industry insiders say there has been an increase in requests for interior caravan customisations and premium modifications.

Caravanning Queensland Trade CEO Jason Plant said post-COVID workplace flexibility meant more people were opting for extended holidays with customised setups.

"As a result of this new phenomenon, we've seen spikes in requests for specially modified, and self-sustainable caravans that allow travellers to go off-grid but with all their creature comforts, which enables them to make their nomadic adventures a more permanent lifestyle," he said.

Supporting this trend, Michael Ballard from JB Caravans said they had seen a growing number of customers opting for extreme, off-grid models or modifications, giving them the ability to travel anywhere and be self-sufficient for extended periods of time.

"In March 2020 we were selling 460 extreme off-road vans a year nationally. However in 2021, this jumped to 1,400 reflecting a 304% growth in the category with all vans starting at $120,000," he said.
