Prioritising hearing health
What impact can treating hearing loss have on someone's happiness? That's what hearing specialists Audika and international research group YouGov wanted to know.
Interviewing 24,000 people from 14 countries, Audika and YouGov asked about the health and happiness of hearing aid wearers and non-hearing aid wearers, pre- and post-testing.
Life-changing hearing
The results were compelling. 43 per cent of Australians thought they have some degree of hearing loss. Many also shared that hearing loss was one of Australians' biggest worries when it came to ageing, a bigger worry than losing their sight.
Significantly, 37 per cent of Australian hearing aid wearers said they were happier than before diagnosis. Nearly 1 in 5 hearing aid wearers reported a 'life-changing' difference.
Addressing related health concerns
Another top health concern found in the research is memory loss/dementia with 70 per cent saying it was a worry. However, 83 per cent were unaware of the associated risk between hearing loss and dementia. Treating hearing loss early, before or in mid-life, is one of 12 modifiable risk factors for dementia as recognised by a landmark 2020 study in The Lancet.[1]
Even though it's so often worried about, the survey shows Australians are not taking action to look after their hearing. Only one in five were planning a hearing test in the next 12 months - compared to 39% planning on getting an eye test in the same period.
