Victorian pipis: Volunteers needed

Now, researchers at Melbourne and Deakin Universities are calling for beachcombers of all ages to don their citizen scientist hats.

Anyone - from dog walkers, swimmers and surfers, to fishing enthusiasts - is being asked to keep an eye out along Victoria's coastline for pipis and report their findings via a quick online survey.

Pipis are shelled saltwater clams and a mollusc endemic to Australia.

Lead researcher Dr John Morrongiello from Melbourne University said it's all about understanding their ecology and ensuring a sustainable future.

"Pipis are keenly sought after by fishers," he said.

"Whether they are on the menu or being used as bait, it's important we understand how much we can harvest while maintaining viable populations and a healthy environment."

The study spans three years. Information gathered will help researchers understand the connections between populations, their movement during tides and how far ocean currents can carry larvae.
