Is the travel bug biting? Well, make sure that you drop by the Adelaide Retirement Village and Resort Expo at Unley Town Hall, April 10 and 11, 10 am to 3 pm.

Yes, you read that right. This free event is a unique opportunity to discover all the advantages of life in a retirement village or resort.

And there are many, including the freedom to travel.

An ideal retirement lifestyle is practically synonymous with travel. From meandering road trips to epic overseas escapades, the end of work is the start of adventure for Aussie seniors.

Or at least it was until Covid came along and cramped their style. Pre-pandemic, retirees typically made up 40 per cent of caravan park visitors and in the five years to 2017, the 65-74 age bracket increased its international travel by 80 per cent. They also took the longest trips of any age group.

But with covid restrictions finally easing, retirees are back on the travel circuit, bigger than ever. The pandemic has brought on a new sense of urgency in seniors to "live life to the fullest," says demographer Bernard Salt. Travel, as far and wide as possible, is just one expression of a changing attitude that is impacting retiree lifestyles generally, he says.

"Beyond the Covid horizon", a stronger desire for freedom and fulfillment, is affecting housing choice too with "the bucket-listing baby boomer retiree looking for security, for lock-&-leave freedom of movement, in a property located in sunny climes or in the sophisticated inner city," Mr Salt says.

For ardent travellers, "security" and "lock and leave" are magic words. Because the only thing better than going away, is coming back - to a low-maintenance home that is just the way you left it. No overgrown garden or overflowing mailbox and no urgent repairs required.

Retirement villages and resorts fit this bill exactly. Residents come and go as they please, safe in the knowledge that someone is keeping an eye on their home and collecting the mail.

If a storm damages your home while you're away, not a problem! The village manager will sort out the maintenance and fix up the flower beds.

Retirement communities support an independent, low-stress lifestyle that makes every day a holiday - home and away.

So if you want to get away more often, start with the Adelaide Retirement Village and Resorts Expo to explore the many retirement living options available in Adelaide and throughout the state. The Expo features Australia's most respected retirement living operators, representing communities of every type and price point - all under one roof.
