A NEW exhibition showcasing Sydney's natural environment and the work of nine talented female artists is so big, it will take three galleries to house it.
Destination Sydney: The natural world will be at Manly Art Gallery & Museum, Mosman Art Gallery and S. H. Ervin Gallery in The Rocks from January 4-March 20.
The exhibition showcases 90 works by nine important Australian women artists and will officially open on January 4 as part of this year's Sydney Festival.
All featured artists have lived and worked in Sydney, including Bronwyn Oliver, who died in 2006. Many of the exhibition's artworks depict Sydney's natural environment, while others were inspired by Sydney.
Featured artists are Joan Ross, Fiona Lowry and Merran Esson (Manly Art Gallery & Museum), Janet Laurence, Caroline Rothwell and Robyn Stacey (Mosman Art Gallery), and Bronwyn Oliver, Juz Kitson and Jennifer Keeler-Milne (S.H. Ervin Gallery).
Caroline Rothwell, Joan Ross, Fiona Lowry, Jennifer Keeler-Milne and Juz Kitson will all create new works for the exhibition.
The collaborative exhibition between the three galleries is the latest in a series, following on from successful Destination Sydney exhibitions in 2015-16 and 2018-19.
Curators Katherine Roberts (Manly Art Gallery & Museum), Kelly McDonald, Katrina Cashman (Mosman Art Gallery) and Jane Watters (National Trust S.H. Ervin Gallery) selected the works.
Since the early 19th century, male artists have been exploring Sydney's natural environment, while the contributions of female artists have received comparatively little recognition.
Jane Watters said the curators were excited to deliver "outstanding art experiences", while promoting the work of women from the art community.
"We are pleased to work together as partners in realising exhibitions greater in scope and impact than our institutions' normal capabilities," she said.
The exhibition will be accompanied by a diverse public program of free and ticketed events, and a catalogue which features the works, as well as essays on each of the artists. The catalogue is available at all three galleries for $25.
Manly Art Gallery & Museum on West Esplanade Reserve, Manly, is open 10am-5pm Tuesday to Sunday (excluding public holidays.) Admission is free.
Mosman Art Gallery at 1 Art Gallery Way, Mosman, is open 10am-4pm, seven days (excluding public holidays.) Admission is free.
National Trust S. H. Ervin Gallery on Watson Road, Observatory Hill, The Rocks, is open 11am-5pm, Tuesday to Sunday (excluding public holidays.) Entry is $10 for seniors and concession holders and $4 for National Trust members.
