UGLY is about a man who has lived many lives: a fighter, a protector, a figurehead, a jailbird, a son, husband and father, and a man who started an infamous brotherhood in the heart of Sydney.
Living by his own rules has always been the way of Phil 'Ugly' Mawson. Paul Fenech, the brains behind Fat Pizza, first encountered Ugly while making the first season of Housos. They were looking to cast a fictional bikie gang and Ugly fit the bill from the outset.
But there was more to Ugly than meets the eye. So much so he trusted Paul to tell his story.
He's been a boxer: inspired by his father, he grew up boxing and started his first gang called River Rats in his early teens. He's been a solider: when he was twenty-one he served a year in Vietnam during the Vietnam war, and when he returned to Australia, he suffered from PTSD and turned to the bottle to cope. And most notably, he's been a bikie and leader: in his quest for brotherhood and family, he founded one of the first Australian chapters of the Gypsy Jokers motorcycle club in Sydney.
As told to Paul and writer Jordan King-Lacroix, Ugly reveals a rare life lived, one outside of the law, and on the freedom of the open road.
Prepare yourself. This is the Ugly side of life.
