It's a common story as we, or people who are close to us, become affected by age related issues that family conflicts can occur. These often occur at times of stress such as when significant health issues arise, and families face needing to decide where parents will live or who will care for an older person.

"Elder Relationship Services helps families by providing a counsellor to talk things over with and help you prepare to have these difficult conversations. When the time is right, we can provide a trained mediator to guide the discussion in a safe and neutral setting. Resolving differences between family members can help to improve relationships. We also aim to support older Tasmanians and their families to plan for future medical, health, financial or living arrangements." said the northern manager of mediation services at Relationships Australia Tasmania, Simon Reeve.

The Elder Relationships Service is available across Tasmania and is a free service. "The service was developed in response to changes in demographics, an ageing Tasmanian population and increasingly complex family structures," Mr Reeve said.

People can attend Elder Relationships Services on their own, with their partner or extended family.

It is hoped that the Elder Relationships Services can help to value older Tasmanians by ensuring the Elder person remains the primary focus when times come for families to make decisions that affect older family members.

The service is confidential within the limits of the law.
