RESIDENTS of North Eastern Victoria have a rare opportunity to see Tom Roberts' iconic painting Shearing the rams.
The Wangaratta Art Gallery has secured a temporary display of the famous painting until February 28. It coincides with the 130th anniversary of Roberts painting the work near Corowa in NSW, just half an hour from Wangaratta, in 1890.
The painting will be shown alongside Roberts' work on paper titled First sketch for Shearing the rams, 1888, also on loan from the National Gallery of Victoria (NGV) Collection.
NGV Director Tony Ellwood AM said the NGV was proud to be returning the popular work to the very region where it was originally created.
"Tom Roberts' Shearing the rams is an iconic work," he said.
"The artist captures the atmosphere of the shearing shed with an astonishing realism, but also with a sense of reverence for Australian pastoral life."
Visitors can see the work from 10 am - 4 pm Tuesday through to Sunday until the end of February and bookings not required. Entry is free.
