THINK you lack the talent to draw? Maybe you'd better think again.
Karen Frankel grew up in Zimbabwe surrounded by the art of her late father, a professional artist, and drawing became a lifelong hobby.
After migrating to Australia in 1984 she began to paint as well but it took recovery from a mental health episode in 2000 for her to pursue her art more seriously and start painting for exhibition. She also began teaching small workshops as a volunteer and was soon asked to conduct full day Drawing for Non-Drawer workshops for UWA Extension, which have continued.
Many requests led her to teach privately, which slowly grew into an art school providing 17 classes a week for children and adults. After 15 years, she sold the business in 2018 but continued to teach drawing classes there.
She now has a book Get Drawing! (even if you think you can't) to dispel the myth that people need to be born with talent to be able to draw.
Available as a hard copy book ($35) or PDF e-book ($12), it contains simple explanations and exercises, common pitfalls, and links to online video demonstrations.
Last year Karen started an online community of people learning to draw.
If you live in Western Australia, you can enrol in classes at Karen's Galleria Art Studio in Morley. Otherwise, you can take advantage of online courses.
