Lonely Planet's Best In Travel Awards for 2021 have recognised Australia for its ongoing bushfire recovery efforts.
Australia secured the Community Restoration award in recognition of its ongoing efforts to rebuild, regenerate and preserve following the 2019/20 summer bushfires.
Tourism Australia managing director Phillipa Harrison said the bushfires and shutdown of travel due to COVID-19 had presented unprecedented challenges.
"But in response to these challenges, we really have seen the best examples of the Australian spirit shining through," she said.
"Particularly as people across the country rallied behind those communities both directly and indirectly impacted by the bushfires, with so many extending offers of support."
Lonely Planet has created several new award categories including Community, Sustainability and Diversity, to recognise places, people and communities that are transforming the industry.
Australia is one of 30 destinations, individuals and tourism projects that have been honoured for sustainable practices, restoration efforts and diverse representation in the industry.
Chief executive Luis Cabrera said Lonely Planet had chosen to highlight destinations and individuals who gave visitors the opportunity to contribute through "regenerative travel".
Lonely Planet has also announced reader's choice awards will be announced in January and is inviting readers to nominate their favourite people and places.
