HOLIDAYMAKERS heading to the NSW Central Coast can enjoy a new kind of glamping experience, with one holiday park thinking outside the box when it comes to accomodation options.
Visitors to NRMA's Ocean Beach holiday park can now stay in one of two shipping containers, called Glamtainers, which have been converted into luxury accommodation.
The seven-metre extendable Glamtainers are kitted out with two queen beds, kitchen, living area, full-sized bathroom and luxury finishes.
Made popular in Europe, Glamtainers are aimed at couples and families seeking the luxury of hotels with the 'back to nature' experience of camping without the blow up mattress.
Built by Melbourne company GlamXperience, the Glamtainers start life as working shipping containers before being converted into luxury accommodation.
Due to their 'caravan like' size, these containers fit into holiday parks with ease, and don't require guests to tow a bulky caravan to their destination.
NRMA chief executive Paul Davies said the Glamtainers were already proving popular at their Ocean Beach Holiday Resort.
"A few years ago, 'glamping' was the buzz word but we're now moving into the era of Glamtainers," said Mr Davies.
"Not only are they incredible accommodation options that can be essentially plonked anywhere there's room for a caravan, they are also more sustainable with the millions of available shipping containers already in circulation able to be converted.
He said with in NSW still looking for local holiday options, the Glamtainers have been booked out and Christmas is also gearing up to be another popular period.
"Ocean Beach really is the perfect setting for our Glamtainers. Waking up to the peaceful sounds of nature, meeting the local wallabies who hop along the garden and falling asleep to the sound of water lapping at the shore is enough to win over the fussiest of travellers," he said.
After spending the summer season at Ocean Beach, the Glamtainers will be moved to NRMA Jindabyne for the 2021 ski season.
"When it is time to relocate to another holiday park the Glamtainers are simply closed up and moved around like any other shipping container," said Mr Davies.
GlamXperience account manager Daniel van den Hurk said he had also been approached by companies in Tasmania and Victoria.
"The Glamtainer in Tasmania will arrive at Connellys Marsh for a plantation management company and luxury off-grid eco accommodation provider Sky Pods are looking at putting some in their site at Cape Otway," he said.
