THE Olympic Games may have been cancelled but the World Masters Games in Kansai Japan are expected to go ahead as planned in May 2021. After the postponement of the Tokyo 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Games, the Kansai Organising Committee is hoping these Games will assist in the international rebound and recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic.
The Games are scheduled to run from May 14 to May 30 and there will be 59 disciplines of 35 sports played out across Kansai's 13 prefectures and municipalities.
An estimated 50,000 people are expected to compete in what is the 10th World Masters and then go on to enjoy the surrounding cities and rural areas - Kyoto is famed for its manicured gardens and vibrant temples, Osaka for its lively nightlife and rich foods and Kobe as a modern port city.
Registrations will be open until February and will be accepted on a first-come-first-served basis. Participants can select numerous disciplines across a range of sports with a maximum of five disciplines to be covered with the base fee. Train passes will be provided to competitors to assist with transportation within the Kansai region.
Australia hosted the World Masters Games in Sydney in 2009 and generally makes up about a quarter of all participants in World Masters Games.
