IT'S hot cross bun season.
Customer advocacy group Choice has taste tested hot cross buns - both traditional and chocolate chip variety - from major supermarkets and bakery chains to find the yummiest bun this year.
From apple and cinnamon and even a very questionable bubblegum variety, it seems hot cross buns come in every flavour imaginable. But despite this, Choice polls showed traditional fruit buns were the firm favourite.
And this year's best fruit bun award goes to Bakers Delight Traditional Fruit Hot Cross Buns.
With a choice expert rating of 78 per cent, these buns had taste testers drooling.
Buns are $1.50 each if you buy them individually, but are discounted to $1.25 each if you buy them as a six-pack.
"Good size and shape. Thin cross piping. Good glaze and fruit distribution. Nice and soft. Crumb colour is appealing. Lots of spices in dough giving great flavour," the testing panel said.
Another strong contender was Woolworths Traditional Fruit Hot Cross Buns. Experts gave them a rating of 72 per cent and commended their texture, colouring and aroma. The buns also worked out to be 58 cents when bought in a six-pack.
Coles Traditional Fruit Hot Cross Buns and Aldi Bakers Life Fruit Hot Cross Buns were both given a rating of 71 per cent. Coles' buns were 58 cents per bun when bought in a six pack while Aldi's were 50 cents.
Bakers Delight also took out the best chocolate chip bun title.
Experts gave them a rating of 82 per cent and commended their choc piece distribution and flavour.
Coles Chocolate Hot Cross Buns were rated 77 per cent while Woolworths Hot Cross Buns with Cadbury Milk Chocolate Chips were rated 74 per cent.
