SANFL and ECH team up to get South Aussies into Walking Footy

Why not give Walking Footy a go? Run in South Australia by SANFL and aged care provider ECH, this is a modified Australian rules football program created specifically for people aged 50 or over.

Played in teams of 6 people on a field the size of a basketball court, SANFL and ECH Walking Footy is designed to be a fun, inclusive and safe game with no running, tackling or bumping involved.

SANFL and ECH are holding free Come and Try sessions in Richmond in February in the lead up to their inaugural Walking Football Competition kicking off in March.

It is a first for mother and daughter duo Susie and her mum Barb, who signed up together.

"Mum and I we never played sport together in our lives and even though Mum's 81, and I'm 56, we thought walking football would be the best specifically for us," said Susie.

Peter signed up with his partner Julie. "We joined because it gives us achance to meet a lot of other people," he said. "It's very good exercise and provides a little bit of competition in our older age and it's good fun."

SANFL and ECH Walking Footy is an inclusive game and much less physically demanding than traditional footy. It involves no tackling and is played on a smaller field, allowing people with varying fitness levels to participate.

So whether you are a budding SANFL champion or you've never watched a match, the game provides everyone aged 50 or over an opportunity to get involved at any level.

The Come and Try sessions are free and incorporate basic skills and rules training, as well as a friendly game, allowing participants to develop their skills and feel confident about applying the rules. All you need is sports/gym attire, running shoes and a drink bottle.
