TAKE yourself back to the golden days of travel when HARS Aviation Museum and the Illawarra Light Railway Museum team up for Trains and Planes Sunday on February 16 - their first-ever joint day of fun and adventure.
Visitors will be able to ride the trains at Illawarra Light Rail Museum and then see the planes at HARS Aviation Museum all in one day, travelling by free shuttle bus between the two.
Guests will pay full price for their first museum of choice then receive a 20 per cent discount at the second.
From 9.30am-3.30pm the aviation museum will be open for guided tours taking in amazing aircraft like the Lockheed Super Constellation (or Connie) and the famous, record-setting 747-400 jumbo.
You can also sit in the cockpit of an F111, walk through a DC-3 or a Caribou or climb all over one of the long-range surveillance Neptunes. Or maybe check out a Vietnam-era Bell AH-1 Huey Cobra chopper.
Due to bushfire risk the rail museum will be operating on diesel power only. The main ride will be the locomotive Shellharbour, known as Tully Number 8 during its days hauling sugar cane in north Queensland.
The second ride is the miniature railway, operated by a miniature version 7/14-inch diesel Strathalbyn 2.
Visitors can board either train at the main platform, where they will also see the former 1890 Yallah Station building (bought for $20 in 1976!) and the 1915 signal box from Otford, in service until the electrification of the Illawarra line.
They can also join a guided tour of the locomotive shed, which houses a great collection of engines and rolling stock from industrial tramways, coal mines and sugar cane industries.
Food and refreshments are available for purchase at Cafe Connie and the Tramway Dining Car.
HARS Aviation Museum is at 54 Airport Road, Albion Park Rail, just off the Princes Highway on eastern side of Shellharbour Airport. Open daily throughout the year from 9.30am-3.30pm
