YOU'VE heard about sea changes and tree changes, now a Sunshine Coast retirement village is offering retirees a me change.
The Avenue Maroochydore is encouraging retirees to make a change by putting themselves first after spending their lives working, raising families and paying off the mortgage.
Aura Holdings director Mark Taylor said it was time for many over-60s to do something they haven't done before - put themselves first.
"Retirement village living allows residents to free up some capital when they sell the family home,'' Mr Taylor said.
"This not only allows them to realise their long-held travel dreams but they no longer have the burden of home maintenance. At The Avenue the lawns, painting or changing lightbulbs is someone else's responsibility. It's a relaxed, lock and leave lifestyle.
"This stage of life should be all about retirees' desires and goals. It's a fresh start. They've earned this lifestyle so it's now time to enjoy it and make themselves their priority.''
Work is underway on the final stage of The Avenue, offering independent living only 200m from the water close to all Maroochydore's attractions and facilities.
On completion, The Avenue will provide 113 apartments with resort-style living close to shops, restaurants and cafes and medical facilities. Stage one opened in July last year with 49 apartments.
The heated pool in stage two (expected to be completed by late 2020) will add to the community facilities in place including a gym, billiards room, library, wine room and courtyard entertainment areas. A cafe is also planned.
The pet-friendly two and three-bedroom apartments are being built by Woollam Constructions on the 1-hectare site on Baden Powell Street and Anzac Avenue.
A free downsizing information session is being held at The Avenue on January 22, 10.30am.
Margaret Warren, of seniors advocacy service Inspired Outcomes, will offer advice on dealing with a lifetime of possessions when downsizing. Her company offers a complete service to retirees in what can seem like an overwhelming task of moving from the family home to a retirement village.
"Sometimes the process of moving can seem overwhelming and gets put off or cancelled because if just seems too hard,'' Mrs Warren said.
"We can take the stress and worry out of the equation by organising everything from appointing an agent to sell the family home, decluttering, working out what will fit in the new apartment, and dispose of or sell unwanted items.''
