THE Australian Shakespeare Company is presenting a new production of Hamlet in Melbourne over summer.
Arguably the greatest tragedy in English theatre, Hamlet is described by the company's artistic director Glenn Elston as "a tale of conspiracy, deception and moral ambiguity, where everyone has something to hide, and the answer is far from simple".
"Hamlet is one of the most human characters Shakespeare ever wrote, making every audience member focus on the uncomfortable knowledge that tragedy evolves from human error, even if the mistake is as simple as leaving things undecided," he said.
The production stars some of Australia's finest actors, including Andre de Vanny (Hamlet), Alison Whyte (Gertrude), Greg Stone (Claudius) and Emily Godard (Ophelia).
Hamlet, presented by the Australian Shakespeare Company, Royal Botanic Gardens Victoria, Melbourne Gardens - Southern Cross Lawn, Birdwood Ave, South Yarra, until February 9. Shows begin at 8.30pm until January 31, and 8pm from February 1.
