Birds of a feather flock together. This is exactly what carer Peggy McDonald's feathered friends will do if the Currowan fire crosses the Shoalhaven River this week.
The Higher Ground Raptors founder will evacuate Fitzroy Falls and take her birds to the Southern Highlands Veterinary Centre if necessary.
Ms McDonald released six birds before dawn on Sunday, in preparation for the increased fire danger and deteriorating weather conditions.
"They weren't quite ready for release but they'll have a better chance," she said.
Ms McDonald has containers ready to transport two wedge-tailed eagles, one sea eagle, one Australian kestrel, a juvenile Australian boobook owl and two tawny frogmouths.
The carer is also ready to move five magpie and currawong chicks, three bearded dragons, five frogs and two dogs.
Ms McDonald prepared her bushfire survival plan several weeks ago.
"It's a matter of ticking things off as they're required as the conditions change," she said.
"Everything that could be done has been done."
Ms McDonald thanked several people for their bushfire preparation efforts in the lead-up to this week.
"I think it's essential for people to get together and help each other," she said.
"I'm really grateful for the work the National Parks and Wildlife Service is doing.
"I'm also really grateful some of the neighbours have opened gates and put new gates in so we have alternative accesses.
"Charlie Carter from the Southern Highlands Veterinary Centre is allowing me to move the birds into their big barn. They won't be happy but at least they'll be safe.
