A GROUP of Brisbane seniors have raised the barre when it comes to keeping fit and active.
Named the Silver Swans, the group train in ballet at the Ascot School of Dance in Hamilton, and recently put on a performance at Aveo Clayfield's Retirement Living Expo.
The ballet classes are an initiative developed by the Royal Academy of Dance and are designed for students aged 55 and over to improve mobility, co-ordination, posture and an over-all sense of well-being, while helping participants achieve the 30 minutes of daily physical exercise they require.
Ascot School of Dance Principal, Marilyn Culpitt said: " It (ballet) allows a fabulous means of exercise to fabulous music.
"They (seniors) are at an age where this is lovely gentle form of exercise - and they do work up a sweat at times. Many of them are unleashing their inner ballerina that they have always wanted to be.
"Posture is one of the most important things in ballet - and from the very beginning, from the moment they walk onto the barre, we are focusing on their posture.
"A lot ladies say they are now far more aware of their posture when they are waiting in line at the supermarket, or even at home when they are doing the dishes."
