COASTREK and Beyond Blue are joining forces to encourage people to exercise in nature for the good of their mental health by registering for walks in their state next year.

The two organisations are inviting people to form teams of four to take on walks of various distances encompassing some of the nation's most picturesque coastlines.

Treks are held annually in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane and Adelaide and all funds raised go towards Beyond Blue's support service - which offers free counselling, referrals and advice to almost 200,000 people each year.

Coastrek founder and director Di Westaway said being active in the outdoors offered many health benefits.

"We've taken tens of thousands of Australian women into nature and there's no doubt the experience makes them happier and healthier," she said.

"Coastrek is a chance to be immersed in nature while challenging yourself with a team hike along scenic coastlines, high clifftops, beautiful bush trails and sunny sand."

"It lifts your mood and supports the fabulous work of Beyond Blue.

Di said research indicated being outside and enjoying the natural environment improved psychological wellbeing, reduced stress and enhanced cognitive performance.

Groups can sign up for 60km or 30km walks and at least half of each group must be women - highlighting women's mental health issues.

Walks will take place along Sydney Harbour and coastline on March 27, Victoria's Mornington Peninsula on May 22, Queensland's Sunshine Coast on July 24 and Adelaide's Fleurieu Peninsula on September 18.

Registrations are already open for Sydney and walkers are welcome to register interest for other walks.
