A NEW exhibition at Museum of Brisbane celebrates the lives of local female artists over the course of the past 100 years.
New Woman celebrates trailblazing women from Brisbane's art world - from the independent and adventurous to the frequently overlooked.
The exhibition focuses on the art, personal stories and enduring legacies of Brisbane's most significant and groundbreaking female artists from 1920-2019.
It features paintings, photography, sculpture, performance and installation works and will be open until March 15 next year.
The artworks of more than 80 artists follow each decade - from Brisbane's decreasing isolation, to the introduction of new ideas about modernism and abstraction, through to contemporary works which have garnered international acclaim.
Museum of Brisbane director Renai Grace said the exhibition would help to build a richer understanding of the leading role women had played in Brisbane's cultural life.
"New Woman will reveal the stunning works of female pioneers, their evolving practice and the identity of women artists in Brisbane ," she said.
The exhibition will showcase more than 110 works through a floor to ceiling salon hang.
The Dome Gallery will feature a new large-scale painting by Emma Coulter, while the Adelaide Street Pavilion will feature a self guided activity space by Rachael Haynes which is family friendly and explores concepts of empowerment and equality.
It will be held in tandem with an ongoing program of workshops, talks and tours led by artists, academics and historians.
Activities will include life drawing , sketching sessions and live performances.
