STRENGTH training offers many health benefits for seniors and a range of new Strength For Life programs will soon be available.
COTA NSW will launch the new programs in Warriewood, Wollongong, Newtown, Bondi Junction and Sutherland in September and October this year and has plans to launch classes in other areas soon.
Strength For Life is a progressive training program which is designed for older people and all instructors are accredited following special training to ensure they understand the needs of the senior community.
The instructors aim to create an environment in which everyone feels comfortable, regardless of fitness levels.
Strength training has been proven to improve bone and muscle mass, to help speed up the metabolism to assist in a healthier, leaner body and to reduce the risk of injury.
Research has also suggested it may extend life, with a longitudinal study of adults aged 65 and over finding strong evidence of decreased mortality in people who trained twice a week.
Charges will be kept relatively low in a bid to ensure as many people as possible can take part in classes.
