ANIMALS in wartime have a long and distinguished record of service to humans. Dog, horses, donkeys, camels, pigeons, cats, bees, even glow worms and slugs have all "done their bit".
In honour of World Animal Remembrance Month, Friends of ANZAC Cottage, in conjunction with the Australian War Animal Memorial Organisation, will hold a commemorative service on September 8 to acknowledge and to pay homage to valiant creatures.
The group will also conduct a series of activities: a workshop and storytime for children; a talk on animals at war; and a visit from some of the kinds of creatures that were so important during wartime. The Australian 10th Light Horse Rockingham troop will bring horses, a donkey and a dog, while the United Districts Racing Pigeon Club will be bring some pigeons along.
Just as red poppies are now accepted as a sign of remembrance for servicemen and women, so the purple poppy is the equivalent mark of respect for the animals that served. Purple poppies will be available for purchase on the day.
ANZAC Cottage, September 8, 1pm-4pm, 38 Kalgoorlie Street, Mount Hawthorn.
