SOME of 18th and 19th century Russia's most stunning artworks are on display in a new exhibition at North Adelaide's David Roche Foundation.
Triumph & Tragedy: Catherine, the Romanovs & Faberge features 150 pieces of the most decorative art from the period.
David Roche became enchanted by Russia, its people and art after visiting the country in the early 1990s and spent the last two decades of his life assembling a collection of nearly 100 pieces with the assistance of Martyn Cook.
David had a particular interest in Catherine the Great, whose reign was distinguished by her expansion of the Russian empire, attempts to westernise the country and enthusiastic art collection.
The exhibition features official portraits of Catherine the Great and Emperor Nicholas the I, the personal hand seal of Alexander I and porcelain which was especially commissioned for the Hermitage and Pavlovsk Palace.
Other highlights include objects in malachite, glass and gilt-bronze from the Romanov period which highlight the internationalism of 19th century Russia.
The exhibition is also a great chance to view the works of Faberge, whose work is one of the most enduring legacies of the final decades of the Russian empire.
The exhibition will be open until December 21 and bookings are essential.
