A colony of little penguins on Tasmania's southern Bruny Island has a new lease of life thanks to a series of specially designed road tunnels.
Passageways and fences were installed at the popular lookout at The Neck in 2017 to help prevent the tiny birds being hit and killed by cars.
Since then, no penguin deaths have been recorded.
Conservation group Birdlife Tasmania monitored the penguins for two breeding seasons and found they started using the underground culverts 10 days after they were installed.
The state government on Thursday said the data would be used to inform other road upgrades.
It is a welcome boost for the penguin species after a spate of dog attacks on colonies in the state's north and east coast.
In October last year, 58 birds were found dead at a conservations area north of Launceston.
