INDIA can be a complex and bewildering place, especially for first time visitors.

Now India's Ministry of Tourism has launched an all-hours multi-lingual Tourist Helpline.

If you are travelling in India and need help on anything at all you can ring the toll-free number 1363.

The Ministry says safety and security of tourists is of paramount importance to them.

Tourists visiting India from Australia numbered 324,243 in 2017 representing a 10 per cent jump on the year before.

The Ministry has also launched a new Incredible India website and a mobile app showcasing India's major experiences such as spirituality, heritage, adventure, culture and wellness.

It has also introduced an e-visa to make travel easier for tourists from 167 countries, including Australia.

It is valid for entry through 25 designated airports and five designated seaports.
