AN 88-year-old man has been charged with murder following the death of an 87-year-old woman at a retirement village in Melbourne's East.
Victoria Police were called to the Martin Luther Homes facility in Mount View Road, The Basin, after 12pm on Wednesday where they found the body of the resident.
The man from The Basin was arrested at the scene and later charged with one count of murder. He will appear in Melbourne Magistrates' Court today.
In a statement on Wednesday, the operator of the facility, Martin Luther Homes, said it will fully co-operate with police to help with their inquiries.
"The sad passing of a woman who lived in our independent living retirement village today has saddened all our staff, residents and families," it said.
"On behalf of everyone at Martin Luther Homes we extend our deepest sympathies to family and friends."
Martin Luther Homes is a Lutheran Church based not-for-profit nursing home and independent living village facility in the foothills of the Dandenongs.
