A HUGE proportion of North Queensland's cattle herd was wiped out during 10 days of torrential rain in February: now Australians have a chance to play a part in helping to rebuild the herd.
Hundreds of thousands of cattle died as a result of the flooding, leaving farmers, who had just endured eight years of drought, wondering if they will ever recover.
Many won't have an income for two years.
To help, Rural Aid has launched a campaign asking us to Buy a Cow, similar to the hugely successful Buy a Bale campaign.
The initiative will allow people to donate money, which will be given to farmers to buy cattle and give them a much-needed boost.
Rural Aid will allocate 100 per cent of the funds raised to buy the cattle. Farmers will be given up to $15,000 each to assist in their restocking in addition to other grants the organisation is making towards bill payments, groceries and fodder assistance.
Over the past six months, Rural Aid has spend more than $13 million supporting farmers in drought-affected areas with fodder drops, water, financial assistance and mental health counselling services.
