COMMUNITIES around the country are being urged to get behind an appeal to help flood-affected communities in North Queensland.
Queensland premier Annastacia Palaszczuk has rallied Australians to dig deep and donate to help victims of the devastating disaster affecting Townsville and surrounding areas.
Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk launched the Queensland Floods Appeal, calling for people to donate to The Australian Red Cross Society, UnitingCare, Salvation Army, St Vincent de Paul Society Queensland and GIVIT.
The Queensland government kicked off the appeal with a $200,000 donation.
With thousands of Queenslanders impacted by rising flood waters, landslides and continuing monsoonal rain, St Vincent de Paul Queensland president Dennis Innes said financial donations were the best way to provide immediate help.
“Vinnies is ready to assist families and individuals whose homes and businesses have been flooded, but we need the public’s help,” he said.
“We are hearing from people who have seen their homes go under water, who are stranded and cut off from help, including our own volunteers and staff.”
Mr Innes said with flood waters having potentially damaged infrastructure, the best way for people to help is through making a monetary donation.
“Every dollar donated goes directly to those struggling through this terrible disaster, financial donations are the easiest way to make sure we can quickly provide assistance to people in need,” he said.
“We’re asking the public to help us support Queenslanders who are going through what could only be described as the toughest of times.”
Mr Innes said Vinnies is a permanent local presence in Townsville.
“Vinnies Queensland was formed in 1894 after a great flood inundated Brisbane, 125 years later we are still here helping Queenslanders.”
