IT WAS the site where Australian stars like Graham Kennedy and Bert and, Patti Newton started their TV careers and shows like Hey Hey its Saturday were filmed.
And now the site of the former Channel 9 Studios on Bendigo Street, Richmond is to be transformed with the addition of a new over-55s community by Lendlease.
Situated near Melbourne's sporting and arts precincts, with the city's soul on the doorstep the new community is also set to become Australia's first 6- Star Green Star intergenerational precinct.
Designed by architects Bates Smart, the inner-city community offers spacious and easy living apartments designed around a vibrant central garden with a ground floor cafe, an incredible rooftop terrace with sweeping city views, a resident's lounge, library and bar.
There will also be a theatre and a Wellness Centre with an indoor pool, gym, and yoga studio.
"This inner-city address will offer a unique urban lifestyle for over-55s," said Tony Randello, managing director of Retirement Living at Lendlease.
It will feature 116 apartments with views to the city, Burnley and the Yarra River. Aged care and residential townhouses will also be offered.
The homes range in size from one-bedroom plus study through to the three-bedroom plus study designs, along with outdoor spaces and secure car parking. Ideally located with shops, cafes and medical facilities only minutes away.
Few Melburnian's can say they live where such icons have graced the halls.
A beautiful precinct with the original heritage building fronting Bendigo Street, the new community proudly imbues a serene sense of place and history.
Steeped in a special history, the new over 55s community was unveiled by Australian TV's golden girl Patti Newton on a special evening hosted on May 8, where the new offering was proudly integrated with TV's golden era.

New lifestyle, new U City
Its been more than two years in the making, and now the ambitious 20-storey U City building in the heart of Adelaide is almost finished.
Uniting Communities $100 million multi-use development on Franklin Street includes independent retirement living, specialist disability accommodation and accessible serviced apartments for people living with disability. There will also be a function centre and office, hospitality, retail and community spaces.The upper floors of the building are devoted to residential living for retirees and for people living with disability.
A vertical village, U City will offer 41 high-rise apartments for retirement living with private balconies and expansive views. Residents will also have access to an exclusive club lounge. The 21 platinum apartments and 18 accessible serviced apartments will all provide access to assistive technology to support independence.
Uniting Communities support services including allied health, disability services, community legal services and personal and family counselling will operate from the premises.
U City forms part of the revitalisation of the Market district precinct a pocket of the city undergoing a significant revamp with the redevelopment of Her Majestys Theatre and extension of existing laneways.
U City is due to open in mid-2019.
Resort-style living come to the suburbs
RESORT-STYLE living is set to come to the suburbs, with work kicking off in a $60 million retirement village in Adelaides west in May.
The Aura Retirement Resort will include four three-level buildings on Rondo Avenue at Findon, accommodating 133 single-, two- and three-bedroom apartments with undercover parking.
Facilities will include a heated swimming pool, massage and health areas, a gym and spa, concierge services, sports bar and fine-dining areas, cinema rooms, a business centre and live music.
Aura will be operated by management consultants Charlie Way and Joe Trimboli, who both have experience in the the hospitality, retirement living and aged care sectors. They say the new Livewell Communities facility has been designed to offer residents services found at five-star resorts.

Two new villages for Ryman
Ryman Healthcare is gearing up for a groundbreaking 2019 with work set to start this year on two new villages at Burwood East and Coburg in Melbourne.
Ryman Healthcares chief sales and marketing officer, Debbie McClure, said one of the trends she is seeing in the retirement living space is a move to more vertical apartment-style living.
Were seeing that people generally want to retire in communities where they already have deep connections, or they want to move closer to family, she said.
With limited green space available in some metropolitan areas, and people wanting to remain close to their loved communities, there are more opportunities for vertical apartment-style retirement living.
The proposed new vertical apartment living village in Coburg will be located near the heart of Melbourne city close to amenities and entertainment, including the Coburg Lions AFL ground. There will be a range of retirement living and aged care options including independent apartments and assisted living in serviced apartments.
The Burwood East development will be Rymans third village in Melbourne.The 2.5-hectare site on Burwood Highway is part of a $500 million redevelopment of the wider 20.5-hectare site.
The village is slated to include 174 independent apartments, 91 assisted living suites and 132 aged care beds. It will be home to more than 400 people, with the first residents expected to move in during the second half of this year.

Work underway at Aveo Carindale
In Queensland construction is well underway on Aveo Groups $224 million six-stage redevelopment in Carindale the largest retirement development in south-eastern Brisbane.
The existing Aveo Carindale retirement community opposite Westfield Carindale was established in 1985 and will be redeveloped over six stages with 432 independent living units and a 115-bed high-care facility.
The $45 million first stage will comprise one-, two- and three-bedroom independent living apartments in two multi-storey apartment buildings. It will also include a restaurant, bar, gym, outdoor pool, movie theatre, library, games room, activity room and beauty salon.
Aveo chief executive Geoff Grady said the redevelopment is about meeting the changing needs of existing residents and tomorrows retirees.
When data suggests that 13.7 per cent of the projected population for Carindale in 2021 will be over the age of 65, redevelopments like Aveo Carindale are crucial to enable retirees to stay in their local area and in contact with their community social groups, Mr Grady said.
