FOUR veteran swimmers have found new inspiration as a team, breaking numerous Masters records.
Liz Wallis (91), Kay Burton (79), Sue Wiles (78) and Nerida Murray (73) decided to form a relay team after they figured out their combined age would qualify them for the 320+ masters age category.
The team – from the Blue Mountains Phoenix swimming club, broke five national Masters records last year.
The ladies’ winning streak began last March at the Masters NSW Branch Long-Course Championships at the Sydney Olympic Park Aquatic Centre.
The team broke the 4 x 50 freestyle record by 16 seconds and the 4 x 50 medley record by 36 seconds at the event.
The ladies then turned their attention to the short-course records, going on to break the 4 x 50 freestyle record in May, followed b the 4 x 25 medley and 4 x 50 medley records in October and November.
Nerida said the decision to join forces and form a team with her friends had been a big motivator.
“Sometimes you think it’s too hard to get up and swim tomorrow, but when you know you’ve got a competition, it gives you extra incentive,” she said.
Nerida was a strong state swimmer and then a life saver in her youth and got back into swimming on the advice of her son at the age of 50.
