GLENHAVEN resident George Tillett is using the experience he acquired working with computers during his 45 year career with IBM to help members of the disabled community.
These days George dedicates a good deal of his time to western Sydney’s TAD Disability Services and his efforts have seen him named the 2018 NSW Senior Volunteer of the Year.
His volunteer work at the organisation involves transforming remarkable ideas into projects and inventions that help people living with disability – many of whom are young children.
His recent inventions have included adapting motorised toy cars for young children to help them improve movement and mobility.
Adaptions include adjusting seating, re-coding stopping and starting mechanisms and modifications which allow children to steer using a joystick.
Always keen to learn more, George is currently studying new and emerging areas of technology in order to discover new ways to help clients.
He is currently looking into a number of areas including micro-controllers, 3D printing and the Internet of Things – a network of devices, vehicles, and home appliances that feature electronics, software, actuators, and connectivity which allow them to connect, interact and exchange data.
