Police are investigating the death of a patient at a nursing home in Woonona on Tuesday night.
Shortly before 7pm, police were called to the high-dependency dementia ward of IRT Woonona following reports of an assault between two patients.
On arrival police were notified that a 90-year-old man suffered serious injuries and was unable to be revived.
The second man, aged 77, is a resident of the high-dependency ward due to his dementia.
A crime scene was established, and inquiries have commenced.
Officers from Wollongong Police District, together with the State Crime Command’s Homicide Squad, are investigating the death.
Police are working with the facilities manager and local health organisations.
In a statement IRT said police investigations were continuing.
“Last night we became aware of an incident which we believe involved two residents in our dementia support unit of our aged care centre in Woonona in which one of our residents had passed away,” the statement read.
“In accordance with our standard procedure we notified family of the two residents involved and all relevant authorities including NSW Police.
“Investigations by police continue today and until they are complete we are not in a position to share any further details.
“Meanwhile the focus of our thoughts and care continues to be with our residents, their families and our staff.”
A report will be prepared for the Coroner.
Family members were in attendance and assisted police with their inquiries.
