Scott Morrison's bus tour of the Sunshine State will terminate in central Queensland, with the prime minister catching a VIP plane up to Townsville instead.
He will make his way from Brisbane to the Sunshine Coast on Tuesday, the second of his four-day trip through key marginal seats in Queensland.
Mr Morrison's "listening and doing tour" will be stopping all stations before passengers disembark at Rockhampton, about 600 kms north-west of Brisbane.
"That's as far as the bus will be going, just with the time and all the rest of it we want to get up to Townsville as well and that's the quickest way," Mr Morrison told Nova 96.9 on Tuesday.
While Mr Morrison works his way up north, Opposition Leader Bill Shorten is expected to attend the Melbourne Cup carnival at Flemington.
The federal election is due by mid-May but Mr Morrison insists the campaign is yet to begin.
The prime minister travelled to the Gold Coast on Monday before visiting a strawberry farm.
The tour comes as Kerryn Phelps prepares for federal parliament after being declared the winner of the Wentworth by-election and pushing the government into minority.
Dr Phelps joins five crossbench MPs - Rebekha Sharkie, Cathy McGowan, Bob Katter, Adam Bandt and Andrew Wilkie - alongside 75 coalition MPs and 69 Labor.
The former Australian Medical Association president doesn't support an early election but will see how "the government behaves" before deciding if she will support a vote of no confidence against them.
The new MP will also wait for briefings on Home Affairs Minister Peter Dutton and Liberal MP Chris Crewther's eligibility before deciding whether to refer them to the High Court.
However, independent MP Bob Katter hasn't ruled out referring Mr Crewther to the High Court and says the government needs to help North Queensland.
"It seems that there is little point in working with a government that has had three months to do something for the north when all they are interested in is pork-barrelling to secure votes," Mr Katter said on Monday.
