CRYSTAL-CLEAR views take on a new meaning for passengers travelling on the world’s highest 3S cableway in Switzerland.
The record-breaking cableway, 3821 metres above sea level in the mountain resort of Zermatt, features 250,000 Swarovski crystals and the country’s first see-through floor.
The term 3S stands for three-seil in German, or three-rope.
Up to 2000 passengers an hour will be transported up to the Matterhorn Glacier Paradise on Klein Matterhorn in just nine minutes.
Four of the 25 gondolas are encrusted in crystals designed to sparkle in the sunlight. Every gondola has 28 seats.
The floors will turn from opaque to clear three minutes into the journey, revealing the dramatic and rugged scenery 200 metres below.
Not for the fainthearted, the effect is made possible by an active laminate glass sheet powered by electricity, which turns the milky white floor to transparent within seconds.
Swiss Travel Pass holders can get 50 per cent off Zermatt’s cable car rides to the Matterhorn Glacier Paradise and the Gornergrat.
