TWITCHERS are set to flock to the Bruny Island Bird Festival from October 19-22.
A full program will celebrate the diversity of birdlife on the island.
Birdwatchers can try to spot the island’s 150-plus bird species as part of the 12-hour Bruny Island Birdathon on October 20.
For an extra challenge, try the Family Bird Bimble.
Not only do participants have three hours to spot as many birds as they can, but all sightings must be made within 10 metres of a piece of play equipment.
No binoculars? No problem. There are plenty of things to keep you busy including walks, tours, art and photography workshops, markets and movies, including a screening of timely documentary The Desperate Plight of the Orange Bellied Parrot.
Quizmaster extraordinaire and bird nerd Sean Dooley will be asking the hard questions at the Big Bird Quiz on October 20 at the Bruny Island Bowls Club.
A terrible bird pun team name is compulsory.
Another highlight is the Louise Crossley Memorial Lecture hosted by conservationist and former Greens leader Bob Brown.
There’s also plenty on the cards for art-lovers, including the festival’s art exhibition.
Featuring paintings, photography and sculptures inspired by the island’s birds, the exhibition will be opened by cartoonist First Dog on the Moon.
