FOR cycling aficionados who are in serious withdrawal now the Tour de France is over, Europe Holidays has come to the rescue with two new European cycling tours – with a twist.
They mix the heady feeling of the wind in your hair while cycling with the old-world charm of cruising the Danube or southern Italy on traditional wooden boats.
The tours cater to different levels of cycling enthusiasm with itineraries averaging lesser or greater daily distances.
For example, the Danube River is the backdrop for a wonderful adventure-packed bike and boat tour on some of the most cycling-friendly terrain along the dedicated Eurovelo 6 cycle path.
The tour starts from the German city of three rivers, Passau, on board the renovated art deco styled MV Theodor Koerner.
Cycling ranges from 35-50km a day (with several days off), allowing you to build up an appetite for the local food and wine, topped off with a spa on board while cruising to the next starting point.
Then there’s southern Italy by bike and boat. This part of Italy is famed for its fabulous seaside cliffs.
Of course, when cycling, those cliffs translate into hills… so touring this region is probably not for the faint-hearted. But fans say it’s worth every sore muscle for the spectacular views (and extraordinary culinary delights) cycling through the narrow streets of Capri, Pompeii, Procida, Ischia, Sorrento and up to Positano and on to Amalfi.
