AS flower shows go, it’s a true perennial, although its exact date has shifted a little this year.
The 80th Grampians Wildflower Show will be held over the last weekend of next month, September 29-30, rather than the first weekend in October.
The show will concentrate on showing visitors the flowers in their natural setting, but there will also be a great display in the visitor information centre, with experts available to help identify flowers.
Plants used by local Indigenous people for food and other uses will be on display, as will works from photographer John Tiddy and textile artist Lynne Stone. Lynn will be on site to explain and demonstrate how she achieves her lifelike flowers.
Guided walks will take place through the Grampians Flora Botanic Garden. Self-guided drive and walks guides and will run as well as a couple of tagalong “Orchids and other Wildflowers” tours further afield.
Entry is $2, which covers the entry to the display and the garden walks. There is also a charge of $2 for the printed guides, and of $5 per head for the tag along tours.
Described as the “Garden of Victoria” by the first Victorian government botanist, Ferdinand von Mueller, the region is home to about 20 wildflower species found nowhere else.
