THE RESPITE Rebels are a group of older artists transforming people’s trash into treasured works of art in Adelaide’s southern metro area.
The rebels are clients at Resthaven’s Lane Cottage in Kingswood who create individual and collective art works during respite stays.
Resthaven community respite services manager Carole Matthews said it all started with making a sustainable Christmas tree.
“It just went from there,” she said. “Respite clients participate in a range of group and individual activities. One group is creating artworks with recyclable materials, with the view to ‘reduce, reuse and recycle’ at the forefront of our ideas,” she said.
The exhibition is called Art in the (Re) Cycle Lane and is just one of many on show during this year’s South Australian Living Artists (SALA) Festival.
The Art in the (Re) Cycle Lane exhibition will be held from August 27-31, 1.30-4pm at Resthaven’s Lane Cottages, Truro Avenue, Kingswood.
During SALA, the state comes alive with visual art, with 9000 artists taking part in more than 700 exhibitions, many of them free, across Adelaide and regional areas.
This will include painting, sculpture, video, multimedia, photography and performance, with exhibition spaces including a hairdressing salon, cemetery, day surgery room, bathroom supplies store, tattoo parlour as well as shops, cafes, pubs, wineries and restaurants.
