AGED CARE residents will get front-row seats at a series of one-off guitar recitals as part of the Adelaide Guitar Festival next month.

World-class musicians will perform in aged care homes, hospitals and community centres across South Australia until August 10 as part of the festival’s Resonance community engagement program.

The festival’s artistic director Slava Grigoryan said the the driving force behind the program was the “important connection between music and wellbeing”.

“Everyone deserves to experience beautiful music played live – the smiles and the applause at these performances is something that will stay with me always,” he said.

The biennial Adelaide Guitar Festival kicks off on August 9 with Australian guitar legend Tommy Emmanuel performing on the opening night.

The festival, which runs until August 12, features 20 international artists and five world premieres plus workshops, talks and masterclasses. The style of music ranges from rockabilly to rock, soul to blues and classical to country.

“From legends like Albert Lee and Tommy Emmanuel, world premieres and community engagement events like Resonance and Guitars in Bars, I can’t wait to share and experience,” said Mr Grigoryan.

The Guitar Festival Symphony Gala with Adelaide Symphony Orchestra will be another highlight, as will the Festival Finale featuring South Africa’s Derek Gripper and presented by TV presenter Julia Zemiro.

And discover handmade treasures from local luthiers at the Guitar Expo in the Festival Theatre foyer.
