THE Con is that castle-like building in Macquarie Street, down near the Sydney Opera House. It is renowned for turning out many world class musicians.
But what most people don’t know is that The Con also offers a short course program for adults who want to learn music basics or to extend their musical knowledge in a collaborative group-learning environment. Run by the Conservatorium Open Academy, these courses range from complete beginner levels through to some that are by audition.
Music is an extraodinary thing, it brings us joy, engages the ‘little grey cells’ just as well as any crossword and does no end of wonderous things for mental health and wellbeing. It is for everyone, young and old, experienced or novice; there is a musical path to be trodden by all.
All courses are held at the Conservatorium over an eight week term - two hours per week. Winter Term starts 23 July and courses on offer cover; Music theory, Music appreciation, Singing (options for beginners and advanced in classical or contemporary styles), Jazz piano, flute or guitar, Jazz Impro Basics, Composing for film and Ensemble classes.
The Open Academy short courses are fun group learning experiences. Students come back again and again once they’ve started.
“Absolutely LOVED this program. Really condensed good quality information into a short time, haven't found any comparable program in Sydney,” Jazz Harmony student.
“Just what I have been looking for - music theory demystified,” Music Fundamentals Student
“This course is a great blend of voice exercising and training and learning to follow sheet music. I was astounded how simply and quickly Cathy and Nadia brought newcomers up to speed on reading music. Both of our tutors were just great. Heaps of fun and laughs. When we weren’t singing we were exercising our vocal chords laughing! Cathy and Nadia were very generous with guidance. Top course!” Vocal Fundamentals Student
Some of Sydney’s top musos teach in this program, including; Andrew Dickeson (jazz drummer), Roy Issacs (guitarist), Sally Marett (vocalist), Sam Rollings (jazz guitar), Llew Kiek (world music expert) and Nadia Piave (vocalist) but don’t let that intimidate you they are also some of the most fun an engaging people you’ll meet.
Winter Term starts 23 July so warm yourself with some hearty music. There is something for everyone so come on! Find the music in you!
